It's no longer big news when a European city gets a new bike share program, unless they do it bigger, better, or with a technical innovation that hasn't been seen before. It is newsworthy, however, that data is starting to trickle in - in this case, from Barcelona - indicating how beneficial bike sharing is to city residents. Just like regular city biking, bike sharing makes urban residents fitter and drops our greenhouse gas emissions, says a study published in the British Medical Journal. And here's a key poi...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Sneak Peek! Designing The Utility Bike of The Future (Video)

A lot of fancy futuristic bicycle designs have garnered TreeHugger posts. We all want to know what the future will bring in terms of cooler features and entirely novel forms. You'll notice, though, that most of those future-oriented bicycle ideas sport a bit of a Jetson's feel while falling short on amenities city cyclists really need - kickstands, fenders, back racks. Oregon Manifest, a bike design challenged sponsored in part by Levi's (recently out with bicycle jeans), is aiming t...Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘Carmageddon’ Puts Bikes Front And Center In L.A.

It's a rare event, and hard to resist for any cyclist or skater - a 10-mile stretch of I-405 in Southern California from Highway 10 to Highway 101 is going to be closed this weekend for 53 hours in order for construction crews to widen the roadway and demolish part of a bridge. The ensuing traffic snarl is being called 'Carmageddon.' It is also an opportunity for Angelenos to see how other methods of transport can serve them, and cyclists and flash mobbers are planning (unsanctioned) rides to take advantage of the wide-open but closed-off roads....Read the full story on TreeHugger

Could This Guy Be Cycling’s Secret Sauce? (Video)

Back when I only covered sustainable business, my colleagues and I lamented the word sustainability - if we could only have a sexier, cooler word, we thought, the concept would surely sell itself more easily, and everyone, including the earth, would live happily ever after. So it is, to some degree, with cycling. The word is more apt to conjure a sweaty sport cyclist than a happy transport cyclist. Luckily we have Robin Moore, aka MC SpandX, to parody our cycling stereotypes. Living in San Francisco, he's sure to do Dutch-style cyclists soon, which may make this prolific songwriter c...Read the full story on TreeHugger

More Reasons Women Don’t Bike (It’s the "C" Word, Not the "E" Word)

Grist columnist Elly Blue stirred some healthy debate this week in a story on why women really don't bike. Blue's well-reasoned argument it is that is the economy that makes women reluctant to get on their bicycles - in other words, women's lower workplace earning power ($.77 to mens' $1.00) also translates to a higher proportion of home duties, making it much harder for them to bike. While it would be great to get the police officer's side of the story, the Internet is nevertheless circulating a "news" item that a visiting female Dutch cyclist was stopped by a New York City policeman and threatened with a ticket for wearing a skirt he deemed to be a traffic distraction. Body wearing We Flashy sweatshirt photo Photo We Flashy. You've heard it before, right? Safety and convenience are among the top reasons women don't take a larger piece of the bicycling pie. Thus far, nobody's found a foolproof way to ensure that cycling is safe, (though we'll say it's actually safer than a lot of "transportation" you may think is safer) nor is it always the most convenien...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Brits Say Getting Girls On Bikes A Breeze

While in the U.S. the bike revolution is happening, women of all ages and children under 18 aren't equal participants. In fact in the U.S. (aside from pockets like Portland, San Francisco, New York, etc.) the number of women riders is barely holding steady, while the number of kids riding bikes is dropping. In the U.K. however, in 2010 women made up a decent 40%...Read the full story on TreeHugger
