mr pico photo'Pico of the Caribbean' sez: "go read about me mate, or I'll unbuckle your swash." Image credit: Russ George. Short answer: there is little difference between the thought patterns of deniers & environmentalists. Most of us don't have the time or expertise to maintain a current, in-depth understanding of science and public policy issues. Instead, a values test is imposed when novel or contradictory information is encountered. Values test script: Does this new information match my belief system? If it does not, the information is seen as wrong or 'biased.' If it does match, however, it...Read the full story on TreeHugger

peter pan playing pipes"Peter Pan playing the Pipes." Image credit:Wikipedia Environmentalists, government regulators, and captains of industry all rely on mathematical modeling to gain insights into how the future might turn, were a regulation passed, an investment made, or a market strategy taken. The method is a half-century in the making. In the mid-1970's - 40 years ago - mainframe computer renditions of the Streeter-Phelps Equation were used to allocate wastewater discharge permit limits...Read the full story on TreeHugger

dust bowl photo Dust Bowl, 1936 Image credit:Flickr, erjkprunczyk US demographic history includes several major internal migrations (in-migrations). Everyone knows how First Peoples were pushed West and South as European colonists settled in and dispersed from the East. The Erie Canal, built in the 1820's, opened up the Great Lakes for commerce and drew settlers from eastern states. The Dust Bowl permanently displaced Oklahoma and Texas farmers to California and other states. In the early 1900's, African Americans left the rural south for Chicago and Detroit and Milwaukee in pursuit of jobs...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Brocolli-photo Broccoli plant. Image credit: all photos this post by J.Laumer. Everybody eats broccoli. Well...everybody save you Super-Tasters (more about vegetable exceptionalism down the page). Most broccoli-eaters have never grown their own and therefore miss out on the pre-floret excitement (as pictured above) as well as the eventual, superior fulfillment. Growing broccoli is a wonderful distraction from worrying over climate change. Grow your own and you can reach salivation over the stir fry. The alternative is dreaming about the the kids in a Blade Runner future. (Some would prefer spiritual salvation but it's not my piece of broccol...Read the full story on TreeHugger

schizophrenia on vimeo photo "Schizophrenia on Vimeo by Ralph Buckley" Image credit:Ralph Buckley on Flickr. It's no surprise that large corporations could have lobbying offices in Washington DC running one way on an environmental issue and corporate environmental or 'sustainability' veeps running the other way. You'd think CEOs would bang heads to make them align with a single pole but, sadly, and ridiculously in this climate change example, that is not happening very much. Forty three major US corporations are having their feet held to a fire for either sloppy management and/or a...Read the full story on TreeHugger
