hp ecopod image Image via HP While all the attention was on Apple's iCloud this week, HP quietly slipped out some news that is not so insignificant. The company revealed EcoPOD, short for "Performance Optimized Data Center," a modular data center that claims a Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) of 1.05. That kind of efficiency is rather miraculous, as a PUE of 1 represents perfect efficiency and the industry average for data center efficiency sits at around 2. While some competitors like Google and Microsoft have gotten some of their data centers to as low as 1.14 or so, a rating of 1.05 is simply e...Read the full story on TreeHugger

batawa computer model fai photo Images credit CIMS 3D modelling is pretty common these days; Google even gives away Sketchup so that anyone can do it. BIM, or Building Information Modelling, is more sophisticated; with BIM you build the project in your computer, with every hidden 3D component modelled, not just the visible ones. Stephen Fai of Ottawa's Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS) takes it to the next dimension, adding the fourth, time....Read the full story on TreeHugger

waves crashing photo Photo by Peter Kaminski via Flickr CC Google has never been a slouch when it comes to trying out new ways to make its data centers as energy efficient as possible. Some ideas have been ocean-centric, such as its wave-powered data center concept. Slightly less futuristic but no less interesting idea is a seawater-cooled data center. Google plans to test out just such a data center starting this Fall. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger
