cyclister.jpg Counting the number of bikes on the bike path in Boras, Sweden. Guest poster Robert Ouellette has written for the National Post, Corporate Knights and his own Reading Toronto. He is cycling across Sweden and reports: Leaving Boras takes us past a digital sign that counts and displays the number of cyclists using the adjacent bike lane. It is a good idea. I'd like to see guerilla versions put on Canadian streets. We need to make visible the growing number of cyclists our politicians are eager to ignore... anyone want to take me up on this? Mobile automated bike counters have to be easy to make and use . . . ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Attempting a Green Family Road Trip

Winnebago Via image Winnebago Via ready to roll. Image: Jenn Pentland I have a confession to make. At the risk of provoking gasps of disapproval from the green gallery, I am declaring my love for The Road Trip. There is nothing quite like the exhilaration of the open road, despite what comes out of the tailpipe. Rolling down the interstate perched behind the wheel is at least as mesmerizing as staring into the campfire or sitting on the Pacific shore watching the waves crash. Partially to feed my need for speed, but mostly to introduce our kids to new people, cities and landscapes, we (my wife and I) sold our house, ja...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Green Family Travel: Transportation

7:43 am in eco-travel, Travel & Nature by TreeHugger

Despite what comes out of the tailpipe, there is nothing quite like the exhilaration of the open road. Sitting behind the wheel doing 65 mph (ok, more like 85 mph, more on that in a minute) is at least as mesmerizing as staring into the campfire or sitting on the Pacific shore watching the waves roll in. Partially to feed my need for speed and partially to introduce my kids to new people, cities and landscapes, we (my wife and I) sold our house, jammed everything into storage, strapped the kids in and hit the road for an open-ended driveabout of the Western U.S. The rub being that we were attempting to be as green as possible while participating in a, by default, non-green activity. This is what I learned. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

element hotel times square new york photo Image credit Element After reading Emma's review of the Westin Element Times Square in New York , I thought I would try a stay in the so-called green hotel during ICFF and see what it was like. But I also wanted to see how green it really was; I have been in a lot of LEED certified buildings and a quick look in the cleaning closet lets you know that the lo...Read the full story on TreeHugger

brock holes photo Photo: brockholes The newly opened Brockholes Nature Reserve is located in a flooded gravel pit and has a series of beautiful floating buildings as its visitor centre. Designed by Adam Kahn Architects, it is a floating eco-village. Since it located just off a busy highway, there is even a green (!) gas station located at the entrance with lavatories flushed with lake water. What a great way to entice in a driver. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger
