element hotel times square new york photo Image credit Element After reading Emma's review of the Westin Element Times Square in New York , I thought I would try a stay in the so-called green hotel during ICFF and see what it was like. But I also wanted to see how green it really was; I have been in a lot of LEED certified buildings and a quick look in the cleaning closet lets you know that the lo...Read the full story on TreeHugger

pratt booth icff photo Image credit Lloyd Alter Students from Pratt Institute often steal the show at ICFF; two years ago you couldn't get near their booth, clearly the hit of the show. This year the work was a bit more subtle. The industrial design program partnered with Cappellini, the Italian furniture giant, to "create modern and innovative furniture design prototypes that remain rooted in boldly disruptive ideas, while keeping the dynamism of design moving into the future." ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Students at The University of Oregon's product design school developed a line of flatpack furniture; some of them look like they might barely carry the weight, but others look IKEA-ready. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Design Goes On The 100 Mile Diet

100 mile diet design photo Images credit Lloyd Alter The 100 Mile Diet has been a meme on TreeHugger for a few years now, so it is fitting that that is the theme of a joint project of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) on the east coast and the University of Washington (UW) on the west. TreeHugger emeritus Domenic Murren describes the problem: "Participants sourced sustainable materials from a 100-mile radius - and energy sources in keeping with the same circumscribed theme - to develop prototypes that address profound questions of place, production, climate, and culture."...Read the full story on TreeHugger

wastberg durapulp lamp icff photo Image credit Wästberg A few years ago, looking for new markets for its sustainably harvested wood, the Swedish forestry company Södra developed Durapulp, a mix of wood pulp and polylactide, or PLA, the thermoplastic made from corn or sugarcane. They consulted with the architectural firm Claesson Koivisto Rune, who developed a prize-winning chair out of the stuff, and who then approached a sceptical Magnus Wästberg, who wondered about the virtues of mixing paper and electrical wiring. But with modern low-voltage LEDs, the old preconceptions n...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Now You Can 3D Print Ceramics At Shapeways

9:13 am in Design & Architecture, downloadable design, icff, prototypes by TreeHugger

ceramic printing shapeways photo bunnies Images credit Lloyd Alter These little bunnies are not only cute, but they are the harbinger of things to come. They are 3D printed in ceramics in a new process: layer by layer, a binder is deposited on a bed of ceramic powder. When all the layers are printed, it is then covered with a slip and fired at high temperature in a kiln, and then glazed and fired again. Soon, if you break Grandma's precious Elizabeth-and-Phillip-got-married teacup, you will be able to sneak out and print up a replica before she notices....Read the full story on TreeHugger

black blum hot pot bbq photo Image credit Lloyd Alter We're at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York, looking at the latest in green and small space design. A perennial favourite at ICFF is Black + Blum, a "a creative partnership steeped in innovation" that combines "ruthless practicality with a mischievous and intellectually-satisfying design aesthetic." Their latest idea is the hot-pot bbq, designed for small spaces. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger
