ground turkey photo Photo: pathwithpaws Years ago when salmonella scares surfaced the mere idea of them sent waves of fear into the heart of us. But today these scares have gone a step further into drug resistant territory. The latest in a growing trend of drug resistant outbreaks is tied to ground turkey and as a result, 36 million pounds of Cargill turkey products have be...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Agenda 21: The United Nations Threat To Control Our Lightbulbs, Our Lifestyles and Our Lives

I disagreed with TreeHugger Brian the other day, about what is driving the Tea Party madness in Washington. He said money; I said ideology. Here's why. In my spare time, I am active in the Heritage Preservation movement; I think old buildings and communities are more than relics from the past, they are templates for the future. For the last year I have been trying to determine the cause of a remarkable rise in the belief that property rights are sacrosanct, even in...Read the full story on TreeHugger

burtynsky oil sands image Image credit Edward Burtynsky on the Alberta Tar Sands I just love the juxtaposition of these two stories in today's newspapers; in The Star, we learn that the Environment Ministry is cutting 700 Meteorologists, scientists, chemists and engineers, or about 11% of the workforce. "I think it speaks volumes about this government's priority as it relates to the environment," says Bill Pynn of the Union of Environment Workers. According to the Star: ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Canadian Government Denies Interfering With Franke James’ Climate Show

12:02 pm in Business & Politics, canada, franke james, politics by TreeHugger

franke james climate photo We reported earlier how the Canadian Government Tried To Silence Artist Franke James, who was taking her art show on a 20 city tour through Europe, only to face the wrath of the Canadian Government, which apparently doesn't like her messages about climate change and the environment. Geoff Dembicki at the Tyee picks up the story, and reports that the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade denies it....Read the full story on TreeHugger

fortbelvoir-roof.jpg Defense Department Hospital at Fort Devoir, credit Department of Defense The US Government has been a big supporter of LEED, thanks to that radical leftist George Bush, who imposed Executive Order 13423, which set "goals in the areas of energy efficiency, acquisition, renewable energy, toxics reductions, recycling, renewable energy, sustainable buildings, electronics stewardship, fleets, and water conservation." The De...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Canadian Government Tries To Silence Artist Franke James

12:35 pm in Business & Politics, canada, franke james, politics by TreeHugger

franke james image Treehugger has been pleased to show the work of Franke James a number of times; delivers a strong environmental message in a humourous and trenchant style. She was off to Europe to tour 20 cities with her work. She has been critical of the Canadian government's policies with respect to the tar sands and climate change, but she is not exactly Garry Trudeau of Doonesbury fame, really. One would think that they had bigger fish to fry, but that didn't stop the government from stepping in to stomp her, with one top official saying: "Who was the idiot who approved an art show by that woman, Franke James?" So they phoned the corporate s...Read the full story on TreeHugger

jarvis bike lane Click to enlarge or go to Craigslist here It's official; Toronto is tearing up its one year old Jarvis Street bike lanes and adding back a fifth driving lane. One Councillor said it's because a constituent complained I have 4 kids and I can't get home to them for dinner." Another said "more roads make cars go faster" which is just what cyclists need on Jarvis when there are no bike lanes. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Australia’s Carbon Pricing to Herald a Clean Energy Future

11:08 am in australia, Business & Politics, climate change, politics by TreeHugger

Australia's Clean Energy Future image Image: Australian Government Australia has put a price on carbon dioxide. $23 AUD a tonne. The country's 500 biggest polluters will, as off 1 July 2012, be required to pay effectively a tax on the CO2 they create. They will, of course, pass on this encumbrance to their customers, which government modelling suggests will end up as $9.90 weekly impost on household budgets. To get the populace on side in the transition to a lower carbon economy the government will take 15 billion from the taxes collected and funnel that back to households as compensation equal to an average of about $10.10 a week. Unless, you earn more th...Read the full story on TreeHugger

light-bulb-savings-photo Photo: Flickr, CC Too Bad Republicans Want to Block It... There a bill currently making its way through the U.S. Congress that would block certain provisions from a 2007 energy law signed by George W. bush that "effectively bans the 100-watt incandescent bulb next year and other versions subsequently". The law doesn't pick technologies, it simply mandates that bulbs need to be 30% more energy efficient, and improvement that could have great economic and environmental benefits. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Clowns to the left of me! Jokers to the right! Here I am stuck in the middle with you.
That's how one feels in Ontario, Canada these days, as we approach a fall election and everyone starts making promises. The polls are predicting a right wing Conservative landslide, and my vote would normally go to the New Democrats on the left. But when it comes to energy policies, it looks like we are stuck in the middle with Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty right now. He was our Read the full story on TreeHugger
