benvenom1.jpgPhotos: Ben Venom Like combining heavy metal and vegan cuisine, the tough masculine image of this extreme musical genre may seem at odds with the folksy domesticity of quilting. Yet American artist Ben Venom skillfully reconciliates these two opposites, using vintage heavy metal t-shirts as the raw material for his incredible quilts. Similar to traditional quilts which commemorate a family history by stitching together salvaged pieces of fabric, Venom's insane patchwork quilts offe...Read the full story on TreeHugger

yoavavinoam1.jpg Photos: Yoav Avinoam Sawdust is a multi-purpose "waste" material that can apparently be reused in many ways: turn it into mulch, throw it by the handful into a composting toilet, or transform it into furniture as Israeli designer Yoav Avinoam has done with his down-to-earth but stylish "Shavings" furniture collection....Read the full story on TreeHugger

marjolainepoulin3.jpgPhotos: Marjolaine Poulin Like America's Independence Day, Canada's day commemorating its inception as a nation falls on July 1st every year. But in the province of Quebec, July 1st is also known as La Fête du déménagement -- or "Moving Day." Chaos reigns as it's the day when many rental leases expire and almost a quarter million people move en masse. It's also a field day for free stuff, due to the fact that not all belongings make it t...Read the full story on TreeHugger

hummerhome rendering image Images credit HplusF After World War II, Bucky Fuller's Dymaxion House was seen as an alternative product for the factories and workers who were no longer building airplanes; it used much of the same materials and technologies. Perhaps architects Craig Hodgetts and HsinMing Fung of HplusF were thinking of Bucky when they developed this design for turning Hummers into housing. more velo photo Photo: oda Summer seems to be the time for architectural competitions: business is slow and gossip is rife. Hence they always seem to generate controversy and this year is no different. The RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist is out and the odds (2/1) are on the Velodrome, created for the 2012 Olympics. However many are crying foul because no other small interesting bui...Read the full story on TreeHugger

diy compost tumbler recycled photo Image credit: BryanMaltais From this DIY compost tumbler to The Garden Rock Star's "how to" instructional on building a compost tumbler, there seems to be a strong appetite out there for videos about building these compost-speeding devices. Recycling Is A Good Thing, Right? It Depends.

macbook slice image Image credit Apple Canada Three years ago Warren wrote a glorious rant, Enough, Already. 'Recyclable' is Not Recycling, in which he complained about companies (like Apple) using the word "recyclable."
To my mind this is hypocrisy. It is "do as I say, not do as I do." Recycling is a complete loop. A joined circle. You are only recycling when you are buying recycled....Products touting 'recyclable' materials are eco-poseurs, unless those materials are also already recycled.
Warren made the case that Apple should be using recycled aluminum in thei...Read the full story on TreeHugger

Now its 60 year anniversary is being celebrated on the banks of the Thames in London. But these are different times and one of the keynotes of the exhibits is a recognition of sustainability and environmentalism in the future. Hence the urban fox on patrol... ...Read the full story on TreeHugger
